Advocating Walking and Bicycling at City Hall
City planning documents are often annoyingly vague when it comes to bicycle and pedestrian-related policies, standards, programs, and facilities. This presentation will draw on the experience of advocating for cycling and walking in three city Official Plans and two Transportation Master Plans in Ottawa, Canada. It will include how to read a plan, avoiding do-nothing language, important statements to include, and more. Participants will also gain knowledge of the shorthand language and jargon used by planners and engineers. (29)

Community Walking and Bicycling Events in Saskatoon and Vancouver
Events can play a big role in raising awareness about active lifestyles. This panel will cover two reoccurring events in Canada: Bike Month and The Hike and Bike Challenge. Each June the Bike Month people offer a range of interesting and educational activities that promote cycling in order to increase the number of people that cycle to work, to school, to play and to shop. The Hike and Bike Challenge encourages residents of Saskatoon to use active transportation instead of driving, and delivers a positive message on how individual actions can contribute to a healthier lifestyle and a healthier environment. A variety of groups now have walking meetings, frequently recommended as a way of fitting exercise into busy schedules. Learn the benefits of such meetings, how to choose places to walk, and how to adjust walks for weather, different ages, abilities, and numbers of participants. The presentation will start indoors, then go on a walk to experience some of the points first-hand. (48)
