Increasing Participation in Cycling Through Skill Development
Fear of cycling in traffic is consistently cited as the main reason for choosing not to cycle, especially to work. Without a program to address these fears, participation campaigns have less impact in triggering change than they might. This session will discuss Bike To Work Victoria's success in compressing basic skill development into a one-day program that combines classroom theory with on-road experience in live traffic. Delivered to more than 600 people since 1999, it has proven remarkably effective in raising the confidence andlikelihood of continued cycling among its students. (49)

A Self-Regulated Code of Conduct for Cycling Groups
Voted the most livable city in the world, Melbourne, Australia, is often referred to as a Mecca for cycling. Cycling is a popular activity; on any given weekend day up to 8,000 cyclists of all calibers can be seen charging about in large peletons. The large groups encouraged a domineering attitude that supported the flagrant and intentional flouting of Road Rules. This presentation discusses the co-operative development of the Shared Respect Initiative and the Self Regulated Code of Conduct for Road Cycling intended to foster a more responsible culture in group cycling.
