Women and Bicycling: Data and Programs
Studies tell us there are many women who are hesitant to cycle due to perceived safety issues, and a lack of confidence and technical "know how” in bike use. A 2002 SFBC study found that the largest barriers are ones that could potentially be overcome with infrastructure changes and a healthy dose of bicycle education. This presentation shares the experience of a successful strategy that introduces women to the practical and enjoyable use of bicycles in Victoria, Australia. (83)

Commuter Bicycle Coach — A Program to Teach, Motivate and Reward People for Bicycle Commuting
Participants in the Commuter Bicycle Coach program in Fort Collins, Colorado, commit to riding their bikes instead of driving alone at least one day a week for six months. In doing so, they earn incentives such as bike accessories, movie passes, restaurant certificates, etc. Follow-up data shows the majority of people completing the program continue to bicycle commute. Community Bicycle Safety for Law Enforcement: A New NHTSA Course in Action
Finding a bicycle-savvy police officer to work with can be a great thing. But police officers are often not up to speed on cycling laws and facilities. This is changing thanks to a new National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) course: Community Bicycle Safety for Law Enforcement (CBS). This presentation will discuss the role of law enforcement in bicycle safety and encouragement, review the CBS curriculum, and explain how you can access CBS-trained officers and instructors. (86)
