The Safe Routes to School Practitioners
Workshop was a follow-on to the NCBW's very popular SRTS
Institute, held in Victoria, BC, at the Pro Walk/Pro Bike
2004 conference. That 2004 Institute covered the basics
of how to initiate and implement safe route programs.
This year's workshop was billed as going beyond the basics,
and from comments we've received, it did just that.
"We covered actual implementation
practices," said one workshop participant. "It
was valuable to get a good update on the latest trends
nationwide, and to learn about funding and what others
are doing." "This was a good opportunity to
get more in-depth information about SRTS successes,"
said another participant.
The workshop included a mix of panel presentations,
case studies, and breakout sessions. "In one breakout
session I got some ideas for how to have our health department
partner with the transportation department," reported
a workshop participant. "I especially liked the way
the breakout sessions were set up, with the discussion
leaders changing groups so everyone got to discuss each
topic without a lot of disruption with everyone moving."
Another workshop participant summed up
the workshop: "There's nothing like hearing about
practical experience."
Sharon Roerty, who moderated the SRTS Practitioner's
Workshop, noted that while there were a number of presentations
at the workshop, only a couple of the PowerPoints have
been submitted. You can download them below and pick up
some of the valuable hints and information that was distributed
at the workshop.
