| Welcome
to Connections. |
Welcome to first issue of "Connections",
the official newsletter for the Pro
Walk/Pro Bike 2006 Conference slated for
Madison, WI, September 5-8, 2006.
The
National Center for Bicycling & Walking's Pro Walk/Pro
Bike biennial conference typically attracts an international
gathering of more than 600 bicycle and pedestrian program
specialists, advocates, and government leaders committed
to improving conditions for bicycling and walking.
|
 |
The
theme for the 2006 conference is "Making Connections"
because success in bicycle and pedestrian work means
getting people from diverse backgrounds to work together
on a range of issues: completing street and expanding
trail networks; changing land use regulations to foster
shorter trips and better connected communities; promoting
walking and biking in health, safety, and social justice
arenas; and getting bicycle and pedestrian issues included
in increasingly complex community plans.
Every
two weeks leading up to the Conference, we'll feature
presenters, speakers, and news about the events that
will be taking place before, during, and after Pro Walk/Pro
Bike 2006.
Please
address any items at connections@bikewalk.org.

Traffic
Justice Institute Kicks Off PWPB
On
Tuesday, Sept. 5, from 11a.m. to 5p.m., the NCBW is
offering the Traffic Justice Institute. With this meeting
as a launch point, we plan to mount a campaign to redefine
our societal perspective on motor vehicle crashes, and
substantially reduce their occurrence. We will come
at this goal from every possible angle, including transforming
public discourse about road safety, holding drivers
accountable for their actions, changing highway design
to better limit motor vehicle speeds, enabling the full
use of every enforcement technology, and curtailing
the use of distracting electronic devices. Note that
this session is open to all...you don't need to be a
Pro Walk/Pro Bike delegate in order to attend. However,
you must register for the Traffic Justice Institute
using the on-line registration form. The cost is $75.
